LOMBARD, Illinois— On Monday, November 9, Lombard Officials and staff celebrated the new Metra Underpass Tunnel with an official ribbon cutting ceremony. Lombard Village President Keith Giagnorio cut the ceremonial ribbon and new a plaque dedicating the project’s success was unveiled.“This tunnel was no small feat,” said Giagnorio. “It is because of long term dedication and team work from all of the parties involved, that we stand here today and welcome this addition to Lombard’s landscape.” Lombard Village Trustees, Reid Foltyniewicz, Mike Fugiel, Bill Johnston, Robyn Pike and William Ware were also in attendance. Representatives from DuPage County, Metra, Union Pacific Railroad, and Regional Transportation Authority also spoke about the project’s success, and the importance of keeping pedestrians and commuters safe. The Lombard Train Station was originally identified as a location for a pedestrian tunnel due to a high interaction between train and pedestrian traffic involved with its previous at-grade crossing. The Underpass Tunnel Project was completed at a total cost of $7,845,100, with only $294,000 in Village costs. The tunnel was open for pedestrian traffic in May of 2015 and reached completion in August of 2015.
