Illinois Route 390 Construction Update

Project Overview

The first phase of the Western Access O’Hare project includes building the new Illinois Route 390. The Illinois Route 390 Project scheduled to be complete by 2017 is improving the existing portion of Illinois Route 390, formerly known as the Elgin O’Hare Expressway, from Lake Street (U.S. Route 20) to I-290 and extending Illinois Route 390 east to Illinois Route 83 along the current Thorndale Avenue with bridges and frontage roads to accommodate local traffic.

The new Illinois Route 390 from Lake Street (U.S. Route 20) to Illinois Route 83, including a new interchange at I-290, is estimated at $780 million.

In 2015, the Illinois Tollway will complete improvements to the western segment of Illinois Route 390 between Lake Street (U.S. Route 20) and Rohlwing Road. In addition, construction will begin to build the eastern segment of the new roadway from I-290 to Illinois Route 83.

Construction Update (06-1-15)

Between Roselle Road and Meacham Road/Medinah Road, overnight lane closures, including full roadway closures lasting 15 minutes, are scheduled during the week of June 1 for the installation of tolling gantries.

Traffic shifts will be in place between Lake Street (U.S. Route 20) and I-290 through the end of the year for shoulder and roadway construction. Currently traffic shifts include:

  • Between Lake Street and Irving Park Road, eastbound will be routed through multiple shifts in traffic to the left and to the right. Westbound will be shifted to the right.
  • Between Lake Street and Irving Park Road, traffic in both directions is shifted to the left.
  • Between Irving Park Road and Wright Boulevard, traffic in both directions is shifted to the left.
  • Between Wright Boulevard Roselle Road, traffic in both directions is shifted to the right.
  • Between Meacham Road/Medinah Road and Rohlwing Road, westbound is shifted to the left.
  • Between Meacham Road/Medinah Road and Rohlwing Road, westbound is shifted to the left. Eastbound and westbound traffic over Meacham/ Medinah Road is scheduled to be shifted to the left the week of May 18.

A portion of the eastbound Illinois Route 390 frontage road between Irving Park Road and Rodenburg Road in Schaumburg is closed through the beginning of June and a detour is posted.

Local Road Closures

  • Traffic on East Pierce Road between Windsor Drive and Arlington Heights Road and on Ketter Drive between East Pierce Road and Arlington Heights Road is currently traveling in the eastbound lanes and reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • A portion of Central Avenue in Wood Dale south of Thorndale Avenue is scheduled to close the week of June 1 for a month. A detour will be posted.
  • A portion of Thomas Drive in Bensenville south of Thorndale Avenue is scheduled to close for two consecutive weekends beginning Friday, June 5. A detour will be posted.
  • A portion of Park Boulevard in Itasca is scheduled to close on Monday, June 8, through mid-June. A detour will be posted.
  • A portion of Dillon Drive in Wood Dale south of Thorndale Avenue is closed through July and a detour is posted.
  • A portion of Sivert Drive in Wood Dale south of Thorndale Avenue is closed through July and a detour is posted.
