I-290 Interchange Project Update

As part of the Western Access O’Hare project, the Illinois Tollway is completely rebuilding the I-290 Interchange at Illinois Route 390, formerly known as the Elgin O’Hare Expressway. Scheduled to be complete by the end of 2017, the I-290 Interchange Project is estimated at approximately $440 million and will include 17 ramps and 15 new bridges in the interchange area between Meacham/Medinah Road and Prospect Avenue and will create direct access with free-flow traffic movements to and from Illinois Route 390 in all directions.

In 2015, work on the I-290 Interchange at Illinois Route 390 will continue, including the start of construction of the new ramp connecting eastbound I-290 to eastbound Illinois Route 390, as well as the completion of three ramps – the flyover ramp from westbound I-290 to westbound Illinois Route 390, the ramp connecting westbound I-290 to eastbound Illinois Route 390 and the ramp from eastbound I-290 to westbound Illinois Route 390. Work will also include completion of a new Rohlwing Road (Illinois Route 53) Bridge carrying traffic over Illinois Route 390 and the start of the access improvements and reconstruction of Illinois Route 390 from Meacham Road/Medinah Road to Prospect Avenue. Construction Update (05-14-15)

I-290 Interchange On I-290, eastbound traffic exiting to Illinois Route 390 is shifted onto a single ramp. At the end of the ramp, vehicles use the same traffic signal, with westbound traffic directed to turn right and eastbound traffic directed to turn left. Westbound traffic exiting to Illinois Route 390 is shifted onto a portion of the new ramp with a temporary connection to the signalized intersection. Rohlwing Road (Illinois Route 53) All Rohlwing Road traffic in both directions is using the new bridge over Illinois Route 390. Drivers traveling between Rohlwing Road and Illinois Route 390 and I-290 are now using frontage roads west of Rohlwing Road and the existing ramp near Meacham Road/Medinah Road. Illinois Route 390 On Illinois Route 390 between Meacham Road/Medinah Road and Rohlwing Road, all traffic is shifted to the left to accommodate construction. Traffic is expected to remain in this configuration until construction resumes in the spring. For more information from the Illinois Toll Authority, click here.
